"The Spiderwick Chronicles" review

More than anything, the movie made me feel like a little kid again. As I was sitting there enjoying the adventure, I couldn't help but remember those imaginative days of my childhood where we would seek out or build "clubs" (usually in the weeds in our backyard or in the Stilson's abandoned sheds) where we kids could act out our fantasies. Though the movie doesn't really deal with it specifically as a theme, it feels implied that adulthood signals the death of the imagination, something I find both sad and inspiring at the same time.

Cloverfield - Movie Review

Quite honestly, I wasn’t too sure what to expect from Cloverfield. The movie trailer quickly establishes that something has knocked the head off of the Statue of Liberty. When I saw this, something Godzillalike came to mind. Either that or King Kong, is running around like a madcap monkey in Manhattan once more. The trailer doesn’t show you what did it or how it happened.

To all the critics who bad mouthed this movie – uh, what were you expecting another “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”? There is nothing wrong with this film – it is well worth seeing; it has a fair share of comedic moments as well as a few poignant ones.
Jack doesn’t ‘mail in’ his performance & Morgan’s narration isn’t ‘tiresome’ (Two complaints I read) I don’t think it will crack my top 10 list, but it is definitely one of my top 20 favorite movies of 2007.

in THE ORPHANAGE, laura buys an old orphanage with her husband and prepares to refurbish it to house orphaned children again. she herself lived at the orphanage and was adopted as a child shortly before it closed down years ago, and she is also the mother of an adopted son of 8, simon.
it’s not long before the creepy children who used to inhabit the orphanage start playing ominous games with simon, whose health is fragile.

Juno might be the best movie of the year. The combination of a smart, witty script, an engaging story, and an absolutely perfect performance from Ellen Page that all click together for a movie that just works on all levels.

The whole movie was incredible. As usual, Burton skillfully mixed the macabre with the wonderfully weird. The whole cinematic atmosphere was like “Sin City” meets “Oliver!” and it worked beautifully. Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett was the perfect partner to Depp’s Todd. She oozed malice in a gorgeous way. The seaside scene from the musical, in the midst of all the blood and gore, was a hilarious relief. Both Depp and Carter were like Frankenstein creations. Their make up made them look like menacing mannequins, brought to life by the evil of the times.

Balls of Fury (2007) movie review

Balls of Fury is a satire of the old Bruce Lee Enter the Dragon, substituting ping pong for Kung Fu. These people are pretty savvy when it comes to hitting the right buttons. They've obviously spent time with the Kung Fu genre picking out the cliches. They included the old teaching master who dispenses fortune cookie wisdom and the romance between his daughter and hero. The outsider who wants to learn Kung Fu to extract revenge for the murder of a family member leading to the final showdown with the evil boss.

It's got all the usual Hollywood ingredients in a movie - smart protagonist, funny sidekick, estranged-girl-later-reconciled, sinister antagonist, set against a backdrop of American Civil War history. One cute addition to the crew are the protagonist's parents. It's got car chases, puzzles, trapped-in-a-destructing-building scene, and bad-guy-finally-turns-good-but-dies ending. Pretty typical fare.

Movie Review: Underdog
Since Underdog is one of my all-time favorite cartoons, when I had the chance to see the movie, I jumped at it. Unlike the original Underdog though, the movie isn’t a cartoon so I wondered how true to the cartoon it would be. I was pleasantly surprised! While the story is a bit different, Underdog is still Underdog…a somewhat reluctant hero who talks in rhyme, gets dressed for work in a phone booth, and flies into way too many buildings. And, of course, he’s still after the heart of Polly Purebred.

Pah… aren’t film makers bored of trying out concepts that have been done dime a dozen. One more film on an incurable virus epidemic that wipes off the entire planet leave one man… our hero Robert Neville(Will Smith) and his doggie Samantha. All that is left of New York is one human being and a city filled with some weirdo looking mutated beings that thirst for human blood. Yawn…
